Internship Program

Program Description

*Our internship program is currently full.  Our next intake for counselling interns is January 2025.*

Our Counselling Internship Program is designed to provide training in intermediate and advanced psychotherapy skills for those pursuing a graduate degree in counselling therapy or a related field.

Interns provide counselling to individuals through our Low-Cost Counselling Program who range from ages 10-99.  There may be opportunities, depending both on the intern interest and ability, as well as programming requirements, for interns to work with children, couples, families, or career counselling clients.

We have found that interns in our programs gain a wide-array of clinical experiences.  Our clients may have histories of abuse, be struggling with suicidal ideation/behaviour, self-harm, substance use, and various systemic issues such as poverty.  Interns should be coming to the Counselling Internship Program with strong active listening skills, risk assessment skills, and be comfortable working with a variety of approaches from a client-centred, strength-based perspective.

We view the Counselling Internship Program as an opportunity for interns to both hone and develop new counselling skills and to support use of self for therapeutic development.  We know therapeutic growth can be both fruitful and challenging.  We encourage awareness of self because being aware of one’s identity, cultural perspective, goals, motivations, needs, limitations, strengths, values, feelings, and personal areas of growth allows us to better serve clients.

Our supervisors have training and expertise in many areas of psychotherapy including CBT, ACT, DBT, IFS, trauma-informed perspectives, Solution-Focused, among others.

We approach psychotherapy from a trauma-informed, client-centred, attachment-based lens.  Our workplace is collaborative and supportive.
