Psychoeducational Assessments

A psychoeducational assessment is a thorough evaluation of an individual’s intellectual ability, academic achievement levels, and social, emotional and behavioural functioning. These assessments are completed with children (ages 7 and up), youth and adults to help identify underlying learning issues that may be impacting day to day functioning.

The goal of this type of assessment is to increase understanding of an individual’s learning profile by identifying their areas of strength and weakness. This information can be particularly valuable in tailoring interventions that can support children and youth in school.

This type of assessment typically involves:
  • A background interview with parents to obtain information related to the child’s early development, school history, social and emotional functioning, behaviour, as well as family and medical history. Depending on the age of the child, he or she may also participate in this interview.
  • For children, parents and teachers may be asked to complete standardized questionnaires to obtain a formal measure of the child’s behaviour, social, and emotional functioning in both home and school settings.
  • For adult assessments, standardized questionnaires may be completed depending on the presenting issues. Observer questionnaires may be required, as well.
  • A range of standardized tests that examine intellectual functioning, language, memory, visual motor skills, attention and academic achievement are administered.
  • A feedback session involves the client (age dependent) and/or parents. During this session, the client’s assessment results are presented along with a range of practice recommendations based on the unique profile of strengths and challenges, and the client’s learning style.
  • A comprehensive written report summarizing all of the assessment information and recommendations is prepared and provided to the client/family.

The fee for this type of assessment is $2500.
